ConnectHome Energy Savings

LIGHTING & APPLIANCE CONTROL
According to the Energy Conservation Enhancement Project, 20% of electricity is used for lighting – yet 50% of that power is wasted. Automation systems turn your house into a smart home, giving it the ability to save you money on lighting expenses.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy says the easiest way to start saving energy is to change out the light bulbs in your current fixtures to compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). If you are remodeling, building a new home, or just updating the look of a room, consider installing new ENERGY STAR qualified light fixtures.
  • Coordinate lighting and set by your schedule, time of day or event.
  • Simply replacing switches with dimmers offers energy payback to homeowners. Dimming the lights by 25% – which is almost unnoticeable – reduces electrical energy consumption by 20%, while extending bulb life by four times.
  • Timer switches save energy in rooms by adding a new degree of automation – giving you control of how long the lights stay on.
  • Turn lights on and off based on whether a room is occupied, so you won't waste energy leaving the lights On in an empty room.
  • Most of today's appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10–50% less energy and water than older models. Look for the ENERGY STAR logo to guarantee savings.
CLIMATE CONTROL
Approximately 56% of an average home's energy cost is spent on heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The best way to control your energy cost is by managing your heating and cooling system.
  • Programmable thermostats allow you to adjust temperature based on day and time, security settings, or occupancy – even by phone.
  • The Alliance To Save Energy says you can save up to 10% a year if you add a programmable thermostat to your home!
  • Automated and controlled drapery and shade systems allow you to control the temperature inside your home naturally.
  • Check your filter every month, especially during heavy use months (winter and summer). If the filter looks dirty after a month, change it.
ENTERTAINMENT
For a long time, homeowners have been reluctant to upgrade to a larger entertainment system for fear of higher utlity costs. Modern system, however, run on 30-50% less energy than previous models.
  • Without reducing audio quality, today's amplifiers use drastically less energy – up to half – to deliver better sound.
  • U.S. households spend $100 per year to power devices while they are in this "standby" power mode. Eliminate vampire or phantom power (energy that devices use even when turned off) with automated switches.
  • You can find energy savings on everything from standard TVs, to HD-ready TVs, to the largest flat-screen TVs – some using as much as 30% less energy. Look for the ENERGY STAR logo to guarantee savings.
OUTDOOR LIVING
Energy savings is not just limited to indoors.
  • Program your irrigation system to work on a set schedule – and save water.
  • Automate the cleaning of your pool and spa. Heat and cool your pool and spa on a schedule, by remote control, or even by air temperature.
OFFICE EQUIPMENT
If every home office product purchased in the U.S. this year were energy efficient, Americans would save $200 million in annual energy costs while preventing almost 3 billion pounds of greenhouse gases – equivalent to the emissions of 250,000 cars.
